The mission of Downtown Topeka, Inc. is to encourage the growth of business, governmental services and cultural entertainment in the heart of Topeka and Shawnee County, and to be the leading advocate on issues that affect the economic well-being of our members, downtown businesses and residents.
As well as overseeing the DTI Membership Association, DTI also provides administrative services and oversight for the Capital Business Improvement District (CBID) and the Downtown Topeka Foundation (DTF). The CBID is responsible for basic maintenance and snow removal of the core area and promotion of downtown in its entirety through marketing and events. The Downtown Topeka Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit whose mission is to provide cultural improvements for the downtown district and serves as the private sector organization responsible for private holdings and project oversight of the Kansas Avenue Project (a downtown redevelopment project for 2014 & 2015).
Our efforts to provide the community with free concerts in our downtown has been rewarded by receiving the following awards:
- 2016 Arty Award for Community Arts – Presented by Arts Connect
- 2016 Waldo B. Heywood Award for Extraordinary Support of the Arts – Presented by the Topeka Civic Theatre
In addition, Downtown Topeka was chosen the state’s Top Downtown by National Life Group Main Streets Across America in 2016. The designation was given to Downtown Topeka for its “strong main street values where businesses, families and individuals come together to support each other and to live, work and play. It is a place where people gather to celebrate history and heroes, pass traditions from one generation to the next and build strong and vibrant communities with new and fresh ideas”.
