Saturday, November 25th, 2017: Staging 3-5pm, Parade Start: 6pm

Every year on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, downtown Topeka kicks off the holiday season with a fun filled day of Small Business Saturday shopping, dining and music with festivities continuing into the evening with the Rescue Run beginning at 5pm, then the Community Tree Lighting Ceremony at Westar Energy at 5:30pm followed by the 27th Annual Miracle on Kansas Avenue Parade beginning at 6pm.

The MKA Parade’s “lighted” holiday themed entries include walking groups, dance teams, marching bands, bicycles, Shriners, military vehicles, public service vehicles, floats, car clubs . . . and the “official” Santa appearance closing the parade.

REGISTRATION
An official registration is not necessary so to register for the parade, please come to the staging entry at 1st and Kansas, from 3pm to 5pm on parade day. There is also no cost to be in the parade but a donation of $10.00 is suggested and all donations collected assist with parade costs. Entries will receive their official MKA Parade “HANG TAG” to be displayed during the parade then can prepare their floats and themselves for the big event.

***You MUST comply with the following guidelines to participate***
• Entry should be decorated on both sides – lights and holiday decorations ARE REQUIRED.
• Multiple Santa Clause figures confuse children so please refrain from using a realistic type Santa in your entry and let the “official” Santa be the one they see and cheer.
• Open flames are not allowed on entries unless contained (i.e., Hot Air Balloons).
• Entry cannot exceed 8 feet in width or 13 feet 6 inches in height to clear power lines and mid-block arches.
• Semi-trailer, cabs and trailers are not allowed for the safety of candy gatherers; also, driver’s window cannot be obstructed and must have a clear view for the safety of others.
• Pets must be leashed and only one pet per handler (no tethered leashes).
• Political campaign or statements are not allowed.

The MKA Parade Committee reserves the right to have any non-compliant or improperly decorated entry removed.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
ALL ENTRIES are required to enter from one location into the staging area (1st & Kansas), starting as early as 3pm. Entry closes at 5pm to prepare for parade kickoff at 6pm.
All vehicles must be licensed and are required to go through the Shawnee County Emergency Management identification process; any vehicles that do not comply will be asked to leave. Please remain on the route until the end since we also keep an exit record of all vehicles.
DROP-OFF LOCATIONS:
WALKERS – please be dropped off at 3rd & Jackson or 3rd & Monroe; parking is not available in staging area.
HORSE TRAILERS – please park in the lot at 3rd & Monroe or on side streets then join the staging area.
CANDY & TRINKETS are allowed but ABSOLUTELY MUST NOT BE THROWN from a float or vehicle into the crowd or on the parade path for the safety of children. Walkers representing your entry must walk on either/both sides of the entry and pass candy out by hand. If spotted throwing items, your entry will immediately be pulled from the parade.
We encourage you to pace the distribution, so it can make it through the route and if you do have leftovers, please do not dump in the street as this causes safety and clean-up issues.

DONATIONS
We hope that entries understand and appreciate that a great deal of effort and cost (barricades, toilets, permits, insurance, etc.) goes into providing this event for the community and ask that all entries participate with their generosity and a suggested donation of $10.00. “Official” volunteers, under security supervision, will be located at the staging entry area and able to collect either cash or checks made payable to DTI/Downtown Topeka, Inc.
